Fisherman 236 - No “low cooling water pressure” readout

There is really no use for a water pressure sensor on an offshore boat except if you have a jack plate. As stated, they are an option and unless you order a Yamaha with one, you won't have one installed. They are for flats boats and some bay boats that use jack plates to raise the engine as...

My boat is at that age

replace the damn red button breaker now!!!! Is that a common problem? I've never had one fail.

    Another Transom Question

Those are just spider cracks in the gel coat. Nothing to worry about. Sort of like wrinkled skin as you get old. :)

Removing ink from vinyl from Grocery Brown Bag

That's not ink. It's a dye used to color the plastic bag. Different chemistry. The sun will eventually take that out. It's amazing what the sun can do. Most stains and mildew marks show up during covered storage. A few weeks in the sun generally cleans things up. The process is known as...

My boat is at that age

I did a bunch of stuff to my boat over the past year. It's the same age as yours. 10 years is the first benchmark for doing serious maintenance. I repowered since after 10 years an outboard is at the point where things start to happen. The new engine wiring harness also prevents a lot of...

Deck Scupper drains on 228 Seafarer

I think that is why Grady doesn't use it. Key West and other manufactures use the one with the ball and don't seem to have a problem. But they are mostly bay boats where fast draining may not be as important as on an offshore boat. I guess you could always remove the ball if there is a problem.

Deck Scupper drains on 228 Seafarer

Grady sources the stainless steel drains from Marine Town in Crystal River, FL. They used to be only business to business but they now will sell directly to the public. I picked up and installed a pair of drains back in March. They had a salesperson there who was the contact person for Grady...

    Decision time

Marinas and dry stack storage are jammed full all over the state. It may seem counter-intuitive, but the COVID outbreak has had a great effect on boating in Florida. They shut down bars, restaurants, theme parks, and sports. The kids were out of school. But they left boating open through it...

Removing ink from vinyl from Grocery Brown Bag

70% isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) soaked on a rag should take it right out without harming the vinyl. Water-based detergents and cleaners don't do a good job on inks.

Easy way to clean this Corrosion?

I would hit the corroded areas with Corrosion-X and let it sit overnight. Wipe off the excess and polish the meta with Flitz. You will never remove the corrosion stains but you can stop them from getting worse.

228 - making it water tight?

Since the resistance of the hull moving through the water greatly increase once you reach hull speed (a function of length), a 20 hp engine will not move you significantly faster than a 9.9. Hull speed is 6-7 mph for your boat.

    Windy ap

I find Windy to be the most useful app. The way that you use swell 1, 2, and 3 information is to estimate maximum swell peaks. If you have swells running at very different angles, your ride is going to be a lot lumpier that if they are all moving in similar directions. Combined with the...

    BAD Transom Rot

I think I understand what DanS is seeing. I also had black streaks running down the transom on my old 204C before I replaced it. When the wood inside the transom gets wet and the sun heats up the transom when the boat is out of the water, the water inside the wood expands and gets extruded out...

    BAD Transom Rot

That was my guess too. I can't see how else the engine could have ended up in the boat. It must have hit the swim platform when it came off. But the transom is a rotted mess.

    BAD Transom Rot

When I replaced the transom on my old 204c years ago, I didn't know that I had a problem until I removed a transducer and a bunch of water ran out of the holes. Everything appeared solid, but when they cut the old transom out you could see the black rotted areas under the bang plate. The rest...

    BAD Transom Rot

A guy on a local Facebook fishing group that I follow posted this picture. He said that it was the guy ahead of him at the ramp. The guy told him that he just put the motor on 2 days ago and "It just fell off". That's all I know about the story, but it must have happened while the guy was...

    Drifting Speed Concern

My 226 drifts straight bow down-wind under all conditions. It's a characteristic of the SV2 hull although the cabin is also a factor. I use a single drift sock with a dump line to get down to 1 mph under most conditions where I would still want to be out fishing. It's funny, but the old style...

    Birds in the Cabin?

I had a problem with bats, not birds. I just blocked the space under the gunwales with pieces of pool noodles that I had laying around in the boat. I had been using them for holding snelled hooks with long leaders. They are nice and flexible, filled up the spaces nicely, and stay in place.

New guy here with a few questions about a 228 Seafarer

I've been in a couple of different 226/228 boats with either the 225 or 250. The 250 is perfect for that hull. The 225 is OK, especially for the Pacific NW as long as you prop it correctly. You want to use a 15-16" prop so that the engine turns close to 6000 rpm with your normal load. The...

New guy here with a few questions about a 228 Seafarer

I weighed my 226 on the trailer once and it came in at 6500 lb. I don't remember if I had a full tank of gas or not. I used to tow with a V6 4 Runner, with a 5 K tow rating. My boat and trailer at that time was only around 4, 000 lb. I towed in the mountains and had to remove the surge brakes...
