Seafarer 226 with Yamaha 200 HPDI

It doesn't take too much prop wear or damage to get a lot of slip when pushing a heavy boat. Good luck tomorrow. The tech should be able to figure out your problem. Let us know the outcome.

2nd Transducer recommendation for 330 Express

When you are running on plane, bottom tracking is much better if you use a fixed frequency of 200 kHz rather than CHIRP. You should be able to select that on your head unit. Noise and surface clutter is to be expected whenever you're moving fast. Very few transducer installations will let you...

Seafarer 226 with Yamaha 200 HPDI

At 32 mph, I calculate that he is getting 31% prop slip running a 17" prop at 5200 rpm. Assuming his speed is correct and his HPDI 200 has the typical 1.81 gear ratio, that's way too much. A well set up Grady usually sees less than 20% slip. That tells us the engine power is OK, but there is...

The older model splash gate also allows easier access to the swim platform when diving or snorkeling. I sort of miss it on my newer 226. It worked pretty well when backing down to set the anchor. But that was in the Gulf of Mexico. For Pacific swells, you have the right idea to enclose the...

    Auto Pilot Question

From the Simrad Product Description: -9 Product details The Simrad GS25 GPS antenna is the ideal GPS for any navigator that requires extremely accurate and rapid vessel position and speed updates. Unlike other position-only antennas, the GS25 provides magnetic heading for accurate boat direction...

    Auto Pilot Question

Both trapper and I got good answers on the Furuno Support Forum. A heading sensor IS needed for the Furuno NP300. krabill, does your Point 1 antenna compass work well with your autopilot? I have the Simrad, which is the same unit. Mine says that use with an autopilot or MARPA is not recommended.

    Auto Pilot Question

It seems that I'm getting conflicting information on the NavPilot 300. The guys at the boat show told me that the PG700 heading sensor (a fluxgate compass) was optional and was not necessary if the MFD was plotting a waypoint to waypoint course. But I called Furuno support today and was told...

    Flushing a 4.2L Yamaha

I believe Yamaha says when running the V6’s while flushing, 2 hoses are needed, one running through ear muffs and the other through the hose fitting. I was told that also when if found that my F250 would overheat when running with the muffs. It wouldn't overheat at idle, but when I upped the...

    Flushing a 4.2L Yamaha

Yep. Only with the hose adaptor. You can tilt the engine up when the boat is in saltwater and flush it with freshwater with the hose.

    Auto Pilot Question

All you need is a fishfinder or multifunction display with GPS and a NEMA 2000 connection. Some of the older ones work with NEMA 0183.

    Auto Pilot Question

I'm also in the process of changing out my old Raymarine autopilot. After a lot of research and talking with Raymarine, Simrad, Garmin, and Furuno at the Miami Boat Show, I went with the Furuno NavPilot 300. It is very highly rated and has a "sabiki" mode that will hold the boat over a wreck...

    Flushing a 4.2L Yamaha

Yamahas are designed to be flushed when tilted up. I find that I need to tilt mine in order to get water to start flowing from the telltale. Once it starts flowing, I can tilt the engine back down and it will continue to flow. Hondas, I just discovered, should only be flushed when verticle.

Adding an ammeter (or two) to the dash

You don't need a NMEA connection. Most fishfinders measure the voltage coming to them, which gives you some idea of your battery condition in general or when under load.

Adding an ammeter (or two) to the dash

Have you found a cheap clamp-on ammeter that will read 12V? I just got a Blue Sea clamp on meter for that purpose, but it was not cheap.

Adding an ammeter (or two) to the dash

I would not recommend using an ammeter with outboard engines. There is a history of them damaging rectifiers, at least on older engines. All you need is a voltmeter to assess the state of your electrical system. Most MFD/Fishfinders have one already built in. You can address that display...

    Flushing a 4.2L Yamaha

You just put tape over the low water pickup vents and use a double hose muff as usual.

    Understanding Progressive insurance options

I learned about Charter Lakes from The Hull Truth, where they are very well regarded. I was also worried about their low rates, but everybody says that their service is excellent. I am only paying $692 for $39,000 agreed value with their Anglers Choice policy. That includes trailer coverage...

    Low voltage warnings

Could be a wiring issue, but depending on the winch you are using and the weight of your anchor, it could be normal. The voltage meters on fishfinders are notoriously inaccurate. Try bringing your rpm up to 1500 or so and see if the problem goes away. At dead idle speed, you have both the...

    Understanding Progressive insurance options

I'll second Charter Lakes. I switched over to them last year after Boat US jacked up my rate after 8 years with no claims and a depreciating boat value. They offer very flexible policies that include towing and engine breakdown coverage at really good rates.

    Transom cap

Yeah, the cap makes no sense. It's almost like they use it for planned obsolescence. If the transoms on the older Gradys didn't get wet and rot, most of them would still be in the water. I just got the vinyl material from Grady to replace my aluminum cap. But it's just as flimsy as the metal...
