Update.. Now shifting forward and reverse.. There is. Slight clunk shifting into both gears. Is this normal? Idle speed at 600rpm

That will be the long term plan. Power head has to be removed to change that shaft I believe. If I can loctite it on and get a season out of it. That will be fine.

That part threads unto the shaft that goes through the mid section to the top end.

True.. I just replaced the water pump while I had the lower out.. Question.. I'm thinking of using a thread locker to make sure it does not come loose again.. Any recommendation? First thought is red stuff?

Shade tree shift coupler wasn't tight and would backoff loose when shifting forward
