Rabud pry up ones are good. I like the pry up since they seal better. Use Vaseline on the o ring to keep it fresh. Maybe if you lube the one you have it may get easier too.

Is there a pie plate just in front of the engine in the motor well? Either screws out or pry out. Sometimes if I need to be in there a while I unscrew the outside ring and remove that too to give more access.

I have made them out of aluminum flat bar, but over the years, corrosion was a small issue. Also aluminum has to be heated to get it to bend without cracking. Stainless will bend in a vise and you can tap the plate to use 10-32 bolts. Or can use nut n bolt.
