We were able to get her out on the lake. She ran smooth, got out of the hole quickly, but we did not have a large enough lake to really get her top speed lol.. it is a really small lake and I did not want to make too many waves for the local fishermen.

That being said, the only issue was she sets off alarms on both engines when idle. I think she is set too low on idle. When we had her engaged, she ran just fine with no issues.

All in all, very confident in her. Now, all she needs is a proper shakedown by a professional mechanic and a really good wash.

Again, we had a really small lake... so no room to try out the trim and such to get a better feel....but we got her up to about 35mph and cruised.

nice Russ..good to see her on the water..
were there any icons or light when the alarms came on?

Nothing wrong with being gentle on your boat.

No lights, just both engines going off at the exact same time when idle at the dock. Other than that, she ran fine. Need to butn through as much fuel as I can and then have the last 10-15 percent pumped out and the tanks cleaned and inspected. That will be a while heh, 200 gallons in the tanks, but I feel confident enough to take her out now.

Now, just need people to fish with lol.

If you suspect contaminated fuel, I'd dump the water separators into a clear jar every 10 hours or say 25 gallons and examine the contents. Getting contamination into the VST and past into the injectors can be expensive.

Looks good, is that a marlin or a sailfish? I have a marlin and an islander so i can agree, you really need to keep water out of the fuel. I had an old carbed 200 yamaha sieze on me once because of water in the fuel.

I do not suspect contaminated fuel, I just do not want to push my luck. My bet is this boat has never had the tanks emptied and I like to know if it gets low, there won’t be anything down there. So, one thing on my list will be run it down then inspect it....just for peace of mind. Will take a while heh.

It’s a 2004 Islander.

I suggested that based on my experience with my new-to-me 4 year old 330 that had less than stellar care and feeding. Since the fuel is drawn from low in the tank, you can save yourself a lot of heartache by draining the fuel separators before they bypass poor quality fuel to the engines. It's easy to do at the house after each extended trip. I failed to do that and contaminated the VST filters, luckily the injectors were OK.

Yea, I think I will add a couple replacement fuel filters....also need a new wrench to get them off, the two I have...do not want to break them if I remove them and not have replacements heh.

I no longer trust much that is left. My plan is new anodes, new axle, new springs, replacement filters and a couple big steaks lol;)

I actually replace mine every 75-100 hours, but just take them off and dump them to check the contents based on gallons of usage and put the same ones back on as their primary purpose is water separation, not filtration. I re-use the Yamaha ones after dumping them out, maybe once, and don't put them on too tight and use silicon grease on the gasket. I carry a filter wrench and have used it underway a few times to dump the separators and the engine filter cups when I have "water in the fuel" alarms. If you have those sensors on your engine filters they seem to work well and warn prior to engine problems. Those paper filters might swell if they get water soaked though. I carry two engine filters, easy to change underway and two water separator filters as well. We do 2-3 day trips and the spares have saved the trip a few times. I get a lot of condensation in my tanks (200 and 150 gallons each) if I don't keep them full, but it is clear water and easily separated.

@Bloodweiser - that is a given... lol.. Actually, I do not drink when driving a boat....I have more than enough to worry about lol.. but, back at the dock... heh. Don't mind others that drink, but just know far too many idiots that it causes me to over-compensate for their idiocy :p

@wspitler - I will keep that advice in mind. Sounds like a solid plan, thanks.

Right now, she runs good. Snapper season is "supposed" to end Aug 3rd. My guess is it will get extended. If it does, I am betting it will be like last year and only on friday thru sunday, for recreational boaters. That being said, I feel confident enough to take the boat out now. Even if all I did was take the kids to the jetties, I would have a blast and so would they, but I went for over 12 miles yesterday doing small circles/loops on a small lake.. heh. I think she can take going in a straight line lol

I think, now, we go fish...have fun...then when I get back, I will have take her to the mechanic and get an entire tune-up, have them go over her, top to bottom, and see what she needs. Then, come up with a plan to keep replacing/repairing what needs to be done, as they need to be done....starting with the anodes and thermostats, and whatever gasket etc that is causing the one cylinder to be lower.

In the meantime, order and replace the 2nd axle and the springs and take the trailer in for a checkup of it's own as well. All in all, I am in the home stretch now.

Once she is mechanically up to par, I can start planning for the aesthetic makeovers like new dash, switches, etc.. heh. For now, I feel a lot more confident in how she runs... just need to clean her up.. lol. Hate that she is filthy the moment I get to the coast... man, does she catch bugs heh

Regarding the old fuel issue ......I have a 12vdc fuel pump rigged up with a 10’ cord, switch, alligator clips and 10’ fuel line (3/8 hose). It works great to shuffle fuel into your everyday driver car/truck to refill with fresh stuff on the boat. The high performance pump is best cuz a regular fuel pump takes forever. Connect at the primer bulb and pump directly into vehicle tank or portable gas tank. It works great and no wasting old fuel.

So. no indications on the gauges?
Both alarms at the same time? How did you tell that both engines alarmed?

Lol... well, I turned one off, then the other :p Yep, both at the same time. I honestly think they are just set too low on the idle, but I am thinking a good mechanic will be able to tell... the weird part was, they ran fine for an hour in my driveway, but when I put them in water they went off. I honestly have not really put it to the test, but it may have only been when I had them in gear at really low idle, so... all still inconclusive atm, due to different factors and different tests. I need to see what the rpm actually reads in idle and then see what it should be reading.

Like I said, a good mechanic will be able to tell a lot more, and I can, but not till I get time to look at it and "step it thru" a few tests... and I am limited on time till I get off work late tonight. May hook it up in the drive tomorrow and test the idle... want to see what the compression is anyway again heh;)

@Willy-C - lol.. my luck I will blow myself up. I think I would rather offer the gas to whomever can safely get it out and then just fill it with new fuel, if it came to that lol

@igblack87 - Sweet! I expect pictures of you and your boat and fish too ;) Send me a link if you post on FB:p

A lot of folks from all walks of life have been waiting for this thing to float heh. She's solid now.. not as solid as she will be, but next month....I have my new list.. axle first.. plus thremostats, anodes, poppits... and a check-up visit at the mechanic. That will set us up for September lol

But, imo.. she's ready to fish!

Did the same, put about 65 gallons right in my daily drivers

This kit would be beneficial to anyone with a Yamaha 4 stroke motor. I use it all the time to monitor engine sensors, codes, alarms etc. It is very user friendly and cheaper than you would think.

I don't know what alarm a 'too low idle' would produce on both motors at the same time

I do not either, Seasick, but that is what the symptoms say. Like I said, I have some more tests to do, then will let the pros handle that aspect.

Spark, I have that already. I have to hook it up while it is running/happening. Since I did not have it with me as it did not happen in the driveway, will need/want to have it with me on the next trip. Only laptop I have is junk.. will not work without being plugged in so, gotta get creative ;)
