    2001 repower

I believe the Yamaha 250 is 562 pounds dry. Lighter is better if you can find it. I've heard that mercs are lighter but don't know. I'm with Kyle, if your motor runs, wait it out to get what you want (and you want a 250 or even a 300).

    2001 repower

I'd look harder. You said you have chop where you are, I really wouldn't want less than a 250. My 250 struggles a little to get on plane in chop. It does it but it isn't instant. You can probably make do with a 225 but you'll wish you had bigger.

Water is midship and aft bilge after washing

No, pretty sure it drains to the bilge but I have never used my anchor and the locker is closed.

What's the best caulk to use for mounting a new transducer on a Grady

4200 for stuff that you might remove, 5200 for stuff that should never move.

Water is midship and aft bilge after washing

I don't have a 236, pinged a buddy who does, I'll report back (or he can, he's on here, I think his handle is Rocketguy). On my 228, the only places that drain to the bilge are the under gunnel rod holders (super unlikely to be your problem) and the rear cup holders. My access plates are...

2004 Marlin 300 - sq ft of flooring?

I just went out and measured my 228, much smaller version of your boat. Just the cockpit and the helm is 60 square feet, so I think that part would be about 85 square feet in your boat. Then there is all the rest you are doing, I'd guess somewhere around 120 total. That said, I looked into...

    2001 repower

Good. I think 200 is too little for a 228. I have a 2020 with the 250 V6 (same block as the 300). The 250 is fine, definitely enough power, but sometimes struggles a little to get on plane in our Pacific slop. If you were in calmer water, 250 is definitely more than enough, 200 is probably...

    330 verses 360

So I really have no business in this thread as a 228 owner. I did come close to buying a new Marlin and I ride in my buddy's Canyon 271 all the time. So some bigger boat experience but not really. I'll tell you what I told my buddy with the 271 - he keeps lusting after a Canyon 336. We're on...

Trim tab screw heads gone on 285

For screws of your size, a screw extractor is just the path to heartache. There isn't really enough metal there to get a hole centered and even if you did, the tiny screw extractors don't have the strength to pull out your screws, the extractor will just break (ask me how I know - former...

Trim tab screw heads gone on 285

That can be a bitch. The normal way is you drill a tiny hole in the center of the screw, stick a screw extractor in there (it's reverse threaded) and then use that to spin them out. Sounds easy, isn't. Having recently gone through upgrading my trim tabs from 12x9 to 18x12, I'd look hard at an...

    Fuel usage numbers, 282.

My buddy has a 2011-ish Canyon 271 with twin 300s, he runs at about 1.9mpg. My 228 averages 2.2mpg. Both in the Pacific which almost always sloppy (I mention that because I've read reviews that claim the 228 can do 3.4mpg; yeah, right, not in our ocean).

    232 vs 228?

You are very perceptive, Fishtales. The only thing you missed is trailering. That alone is a good reason to stick with my 228. I just need to pick my days. That said, it's fun to learn how other people are running their boats, what works for them.

    232 vs 228?

I fish year around and I'm a wuss, I never take the curtains down. If it is really warm, I'll roll up the sides but in 3 years, I think I've done that once. Different strokes...

What's on your list for winter projects?

It's for people with Garmin touchscreens with no buttons. It gives you your buttons back which is actually useful while underway in slop.

    Refurbishing Yamaha Outboards

Horg, On my first boat I had a Yamaha 150hp 2 stroke with carbs. I hated that engine even though I was told it was a work horse. It turned out my problem was my fuel lines, they were rotting from the inside out. If that were my boat, I'd be pulling the line off the water separator and trying...

What's on your list for winter projects?

A little update: Garmin auto pilot installed, works great. I'm flip flopping on power steering. I was going to do it, but was working on connecting my kicker to the main engine and had to decouple the seastar from the main engine. Found that the nut connecting them was too tight, got that...

    232 vs 228?

Huh, I run with the curtains on 3 sides, I don't use the ones facing the cockpit. I've definitely needed them in Northern California's Pacific. But that's in pretty snotty conditions, 6 foot swells with some wind chop on top (yeah, I shouldn't go out in that, 6'@9s is sort of where I go "why...

    Trim-tab model 1990 Explorer 24

Agreed. Though "upsize" might be "right size" when it comes to Grady boats. Go to Bennett's web site and see what they recommend, in my experience it is much larger than what Grady puts on. I'm not sure why because even the tiny ones that Grady puts on will spin the boat around if you put one...
