Battery replacement 96. 272 sailfish. Any recommendations I’m thinking Deka group 24

With the more economical flooded batteries, bigger is better if you have the room and can handle the weight. Group 24s are a bit small for my liking, although they may meet the minimum requirements for your engine. The Deka Group 27 is pretty standard OEM installation for Yamahas. There are a...

    Gas Tank fuel pickup

My guess, without seeing it, is that you are looking at the fuel tank vent, and not the pick up.

    Guest Battery Switch Question

His third drawing would work that way, but should not be done. You always want the ability to turn off all power to the house without having to manually disconnect a battery. On my other boat I have the same setup as the second drawing and use a deep cycle battery as Batt #2 since it will be...

    Guest Battery Switch Question

You don't need to disconnect anything. Select Batt #1 and check voltage at each positive terminal while running on each battery. The aux lead should produce 13+ volts on Batt #2 and the normal charging circuit should produce 13+ volts on #1 battery.

    Guest Battery Switch Question

I'd say your mystery cable, with the arrow, is an alternate (aux) charge lead from your engine. Yamahas are designed with two charging outputs, but only one is normally connected at installation. Note the red covering. I'd say the aux lead is wired direct to the #2 battery so that you would...

    Diesel Generator Question

I use two part Rislone Diesel additive, mostly for it's lubricity additive given the warm temps in FL gelling is not an issue. I also use Rotella 15W-40 T6 full synthetic engine oil for added protection and less diesel soot.

Batteries low voltage help sailfish 274

If you meant "kad" vs "mad," I believe there is an electrically actuated supercharger that could be the problem with acceleration. I suspect it is similar to the AC compressor clutch design, but that is quite different from the typical turbocharged diesels. I'd get the battery problem fixed...

    30A Fuse not hooked up

A choke simply reduces the air entering the carb and doesn't change the fuel flow. A primer actually adds fuel. The whole idea is to enrich the starting air/fuel mixture. If there is a manual/solenoid activated choke it just closes a butterfly a bit. That 30A fuse is not likely to be...

    Yamaha Gauges

Need more detail. Yamaha makes a combined gauge, one is round and one is square. Look for Command Link gauges, they are digital.

    Squeaky steering wheel

I use silicone spray which doesn't stain as much and is not petroleum based. Use the long tube to get some into the shaft bushing. I recently found the Blaster brand of silicone spray that seems to have more and thicker silicone lubricant than some of the others. If you are concerned with...

Garmin Sonar Not Reading Bottom at Speed

If you haven't already, check out the SternMate website for discussions on placement. I have the Garmin 94SV with the GT51TM transducer and it reads great sideview and traditional chirp after a couple adjustments (SternMate mounting system) up the about 60. ' Different freqs but similar.

    Oil Change pump?

One thing I've found on my motors (F250s and F150) is that unless you tilt them up a bit for a few minutes after they have been run, you may still have some oil up behind the pistons in the block, especially if the bow is up slightly with the engines tilted in. The cylinder sleeves are tilted...

    Oil Change pump?

I haven't verified the depth of the dipstick tube on my motors. I just use the plastic tube and don't bother with the drain plug as one of my boats is on a lift and that is always messy regardless. I do know that on cars I have worked on, the tube isn't even as long as the dipstick itself. At...

    Oil Change pump?

Remember that dipstick tubes don't go all the way to the bottom of the oil pan. Can't say for sure, but there may be an inch of oil that will not be removed when you don't use the plastic tube all the way to the bottom of the oil pan. I've had one of the manual ones for years and never had an...

    Oil Change pump?

I use one of the manual suction type pumps that holds 8 quarts. This type comes with two different diameter tubes. The smaller one fits easily down the dipstick tube. A lot less messy and I use it on a lot of different engines. Can't recommend it highly enough...

ABRUPT STALLING AT ABOUT 3700 RPM

The cam sensors throw a code, even if intermittent. I'd get the YDIS diagnostic software and see what it says when the engine stalls. I agree that the VST is most common. Could be an LP or HP pump, but those typically are not intermittent. Get the YDIS for $60 on ebay and watch what...

    Autopilot help

Any pump of the correct rating should work. The components that might cause your problem start with the flux gate compass and then the course computer. I have the same autopilot and there are a variety of Raymarine course computers that will work. It sounds like the likely cause is the flux...

    Squeaky Steering wheel

The fill port is for hydraulic fluid (SeaStar steering system most likely) that runs your steering rams and probably has nothing to do with the squeak. Get some silicon spray and spray around the rubbing surfaces on the helm mount. If it is a tilt helm there is a u-joint and some bushings that...
