    Re-powered my GW226 with a Honda BF250

I'm very happy with the engine. I started giving it pulses of full throttle during the second hour. I've been really good about varying the speed and letting the engine work for the first 7 hr. I'll keep that up until 10 hours on the clock. I babied the Yamaha when I first got it. I spent a...

    Re-powered my GW226 with a Honda BF250

Just an update: The Honda gets about the same mileage as the old 3.3 liter F250 but the boat tops out at only 42 mph instead of 44 mph turning the same modified 16" prop at 6000 rpm. I can get 3.3 mpg with a following sea at 4000 rpm. The boat seems happier running at 4500 rpm when conditions...

    Transom Bang Plate!

I paid $72 for a 6' piece of vinyl that needed to be cut into 3 pieces to replace my aluminum bang plate when I repowered. I have some left over but not enough to do another transom. Grady insisted that I get it through a dealer which seems to be their policy these days. It was a complete...

Converting 228 aux fuel tank area to storage

I converted the forward tank compartment on my old 1986 Seafarer to a storage area. I put a large plastic tub in there to keep things away from the bilge water. I used to put 2 scuba tanks in there. I used the original floor panel as the hatch. This required some cutting in the area where...

    Auto pilot on 228

You sure have a crowded dash! I recognize the Yamaha, Furuno, and Bennet gauges and controls, but what is the rest of that stuff?

Do you have a ferrite suppressor on your radio power line? That usually helps. So does wrapping aluminum foil around your antenna wire.

They don't want you to mount the compass that far forward so as to minimize the pitch as you bounce over the waves. But who knows? We're all just figuring this stuff out. BTW, be careful to use the same NMEA 2000 T-connectors when you expand your backbone for the autopilot connections. While...

Well, I just went out and re-checked. If I hold a hand compass right at the corner of the bulkhead at the edge of the door I don't see any deflection when I power up the pump. It's about 18" from the pump. MAYBE that location will work after all. I'll give it a shot and let you know.

That location is too close to the pump. I got significant interference there using a hand compass. I may move it to the port bulkhead though. The best spot is actually under the floor in the water tank compartment. But I just didn't want to lift and have to re-seal the floor panel and run...

I've got the power coming in at the left end, the engine data cable, a data logger, a fluid level sensor connected to the fuel tank sender, a Simrad Evo3, and then the 3 Furuno cables and a terminator. Everything seems to have been recognized by everything else automatically. I haven't tried...

Here is the final installation of the head unit and compass. I still need to fab a box to cover the compass.

    Crazy Repower Idea

There is a big difference between the SV2 and pre-SV2 hulls as far as power requirements. 200 hp was fine on the pre-SV2 hull. They are lighter and don't have as much wetted surface area. Most of the older 226/228 boats came with 200 hp 2-strokes. Not so for the newer design. You are going to...

Those black rubber things are vibration dampers that came with the Raymarine pump. They are installed wrong because that's the way the original installer did them. I only looked up how to do it right after I relocated the pump. If it makes too much noise I'll put them on correctly...

Here is where I plan to mount the computer and the heading sensor. I'll build a box to cover the heading sensor so that it doesn't get stepped on. If the location of the computer inside the helm bulkhead has interference from the pump, I'll move it to the port side.

I just finished mounting the pump for my Furuno AP300 on the outside of the bulkhead behind the rigging box. As you can see, there is plenty of room for the pump. But not for both the pump and the computer.

How do you deal with smokers?

I hate throwing things in the water. But a couple of times over the years I've thrown packs of cigarettes overboard when people insisted on smoking. I have the same policy for people who insist on fishing after I say that it's time to go back. After throwing the bait overboard there isn't...

Locate the pump on the helm bulkhead behind the rigging box. Locate the computer on bulkhead inside of the cabin. The port side keeps it away from the pump and other electrical interference. Locating the heading sensor is more problematic. At least the Simrad one is waterproof. Trapper has...

1987 228 Seafarer Aluminum tank and Fuel lines replacement

You really need to replace that tank if it is the original. I usually waited 15 years before I check my tanks over the years. But by then they all had leaks. You have a lot of crevice corrosion on the top, so I'd worry about what the bottom looks like.
