I can't offer any possible solutions except to say that any "self correcting" issues I have ever had with an outboard...or car....or water heater....or whatever.....at some point will stop self correcting and at the worst possible time. I wouldn't be going anywhere until the issue is resolved...

I wouldn't trade my plow anchor for anything. Plenty of chain is key also.

Piece of cake to remove and replace forward tank on an Offshore. They do seem to last longer than the main but I would check it out thoroughly....it is 34 years old afterall. I would also replace all fuel lines as well.....filler line too. They can dry out and crack.

I have been very happy with my LENCO electric trim tabs.

JMAIN.....my Offshore is configured quite differently than your Marlin so I don't know what I can add. I was able to pull my tank....make a sketch for a quote from a fabricator and then bring in the old tank for the welder to use as a template. Not much to re-installing......teak...

I have replaced a few tanks in my Grady's over the years. My sincere recommendation is to replace the tanks now, while you are at it because you will have continuing problems down the road. Those tanks are at the end of their useful life (25 years) and you will end up with a bilge full of fuel...

When I bought my '82 Offshore it had been so neglected the cabin had dirt and leaves packed in it....the outboard had not been serviced in so long that the levers to take the cover off were seized up.....electronics were ancient....no trim tabs.....seat pedestals were all messed up.....aux fuel...

I installed strips of those blue LED lights under the gunwale on my offshore. They use very little juice....are indirect and were very inexpensive. Very easy to install also. 20lf cost about $30. I tied them into my compass light switch.....both are very low draw. I have had them lit at the dock...

Wow!! Those pics are terrible! I think Seasick has it right though.....I would try tape on the lower half of the lens and see if that helps. If you do install split lights...which I think would solve your problem....just leave the existing one there and disconnect it. Simple wiring job.

Fuel lines...$2.50 per ft.....that is where I would be starting......sounds like it may be sucking wind through a cracked line.
