Should I be concerned about ice?

For the sake of convenience I'm considering taking the boat to the trailer guy tomorrow rather than wait another week or more. I will have to drop the boat in his pond and he won't put it on the new trailer till Monday. Saturday weather is forecasted to be a high of 34 and low of 24. Ice will...

Seafarer 228G water acummulation, front bilge area

I know that when our boat is level the front of the hull is several inches lower than the aft which would require a forward bilge. From the looks of your photos the hull is still not high enough for all of it to drain. If you are pumping out significant water then the previous posters comment...

Microbial Growth inside your fuel system

Are you sure that isn't corrosion from phase separation? Thankfully I have only come across what you are describing (appearance anyway) in a float bowl on a snowblower.

What size motor (length/HP) for 81' 24' Offshore?

I would think grady would still have the specs for this boat, but the standards might have changed. Some things to consider: - was the boat designed for twins? - does the boat have or will you add a hard top? - are you considering a 2 or 4 stroke? - bottom paint? Our boat tops out at 44 mph...

Trailer: to buy or not to buy?

I know if I threw money at the trailer I have I could get it to work better, but I know it will never be as easy or as safe as a bunk set-up. My dad and I had loading a boat onto a bunk trailer down to about a 3 minute opperation once the trailer hit the water. I don't ever see my current roller...

Trailer: to buy or not to buy?

No, it is not my current trailer. Sagging was the wrong term. Creeping down would be a better description. The trailer I have now is a roller trailer. Works great at shallow ramps but is a bear with steep ramps. The pulpit hits the winch stand when launching and recovering. It is not a cheap or...

Trailer: to buy or not to buy?

Dennis, Based on my technical experience I would agree with your statement. A maximum load rating must take into account impact loads induced onto the trailer effectively exceeding the static load significantly. However, past experience with an EZ Loader (bought new) that was loaded to within...

Trailer: to buy or not to buy?

I was able to speak to someone at Continental today. Not impressed. He first told me that since the boat was about 6k lbs that I should just buy their 6k lbs trailer. I then asked about reserve capacity of 10-15%. His response was "ya, that might be a good idea." I then asked about the...

Trailer: to buy or not to buy?

I appreciate all the feedback. I already have a trailer. I just don't care for it because the ramps around here are so steep that It makes loading and unloading very difficult. If we had shallow ramps around here I would gladly keep it. I tried calling Continental today and could not reach...

Trailer: to buy or not to buy?

I have 3 major issues with disc brakes: - they bite equally well in reverse as they do forward making backing up a potential issue if I go with a surge set-up. Drums primarily bite forward only. Correct me if I'm wrong. - The trailer will sit most of the time. I would think I would be more prone...

Trailer: to buy or not to buy?

I had wondered about the 8500 lb capacity. A local dealer has Load Rites on his lot and can order whatever he wants. A 6200 lb trailer uses a lighter frame compared to the next size up at 7400. He claims the 8400 is the same but bigger brakes. I wonder if the spring rates are different? Ohio...

Trailer: to buy or not to buy?

I found an aluminum Continental trailer near me that might work for our Voyager. It has plenty of capacity at 8500 lbs, but of course it has some issues worth pondering. For example: 1) The trailer was used in salt water and has sat outside its entire life of 8 years. The finish on the aluminum...

What could of caused this piston to melt?

I suspect you have had more than one issue to cause this damage. If you google detonation images you will find photos with piston damage similar to your condition, but not as bad. As seasick mentioned a lean condition will typically cause hole through the top of the piston. Detonation/...

What could of caused this piston to melt?

I've rebuilt dozens of water cooled 2 strokes, but never an outboard. I can only speculate one would check similar wear areas like piston skirt wear, wrist pin wear, big and small end connecting rod wear and connecting rod side play. If all that checks out you will still need to determine with...

What could of caused this piston to melt?

If your bearings, crank, and rods are still within spec, it might be that simple. If that cylinder was running lean or sucking water, I would be concerned with the previously mentioned. Also dont overlook the cost of gaskets. They don't come cheap.

What could of caused this piston to melt?

As for your original question regarding rebuilding to sell... no way. Considering the resale of old 2 strokes and Yamaha's outrageous prices for parts, you would be much better parting it out or keeping for parts.

What do you like and dislike about your Grady?

I agree with most assessments with one major addition to the gripe list: -my dad owned an Overnighter and we now own the Voyager. The problem is the same even on the new boats... not nearly enough storage space for critical boating gear. I love how boat manufacturers always show cabins decked...

sadly last ride of the year

Tomorrow will be our last day out. I hope it goes better than last year. At the time we were pulling the boat before the remnants of Sandy pounded northern Ohio. We dropped the boat in from the rack just before they closed for the day. Sandy was going to hit that night so it was imperative that...

Fresh water shower pump not working

Ours ultimately goes to the bilge. I would guess Grady likely considered the same for your boat.
