I have a 1999 228G Seafarer with a 2012 Suzuki DF250 running a 3x16x18.5 pitch Suzuki prop. I like running it at 4400rpm and 31 mph with 4 people and full fuel. Over 44 mph at WOT but I don’t run it long because of fuel burn.
I‘ll share my experience, I had a 542 Campion for 11 years, built in British Columbia and a great boat. My family was growing and decided to look for a 228 Seafarer about 5 years ago. I do a lot of research, I mean a lot of research, drives my wife nuts. I went out on a limb and boat a 1999 228...
I have a 2012 250 Suzuki on my 1999 Seafarer and it has lots of power even with 6 people on board. With 4 people I cruise at 31 mph at 4400 rpm. It has an incredible hole shot with the variable valve timing and very quiet.
As others have said, a 150hp would be ridiculously under powered for that...
I ended up replacing the box with Seafoam Starboard that covers the rigging from the transom under the helm on my new to me Seafarer. The original vinyl over plywood had rotted along the bottom over the years from water leaking from the windshield I believe. I also noticed some rot on the port...
I have the Suzuki main and 9.9 EFI and they work great on my Seafarer, lots of power and quiet, a great set of engines and yes there is the option to upgrade the 9.9 to 15 hp or 20 hp using the existing ECM.
I for one can not understand the logic of a flip down door near floor level on any ocean boat, it’s just not safe. Just glass in a curved permanent wall connected to the transom where the cowling would never hit, lots of manufacturers do this. But maybe I‘m missing something with boat builders.
I didn’t realize how blue they really were until wiping with acetone, it really brings the colour out as others on this forum have mentioned. I originally thought they were blackish. Great advice from members here as always.
Trapper, I’m a stones throw away from you in West Courtenay, drop by some day and you can measure my 228 Seafarer to compare to your 208.
I should mention that a guy on the dock at Nootka last summer who owns a 208 asked me to sell him my 228.
I have a spray bottle with a 50/50 bleach and water mix that I use on everything, everywhere on the boat, house, camper, horse trailer, barn and it works great for mould and that black stain.
As Norcoastal was asking, I thought I would start a new thread showing the upgrade I did under the helm on my new to me 1999 Seafarer where the original material was rotten/delaminating from water. Seafoam starboard was an exact match and easy to work with, this will most likely last the life of...
It took me almost 8 years of looking to finally find and make the leap into a 228 Seafarer as it checked every box on my boat must have list, the 208 was just too small and the open transom just doesn’t make sense. I think this is a simple case of people “don’t know what they don’t know” about...
Wow I just learned something valuable again from this site and the members thank you. I just read the ABYC standards for wire connections so will follow those from now on.
Hmmm interesting I would have thought that soldering was the gold standard for all electrical connections, especially in marine environment. Could some elaborate on this topic for me, thanks, we may need a new thread for this.
