228 - making it water tight?

This seems like the best explanation. It leads to questions though. What if your batteries are fully charged, where does the electricity go then? Or does it have a sensor that knows what the battery needs and shuts off the flow somehow when the battery is full? If it can do that, couldn't it...

228 - making it water tight?

That was the plan. Tohatsu 9.9, 25", EFI, power tilt, power and manual start, high thrust. And steering linkage. Around $4K installed. To leeccoll who said same brand, I like that Tohatsu is lighter and is fuel injected. Yamaha is heavier and carb-ed. And over on THT I got multiple people...

    1999 226 Seafarer

First of all, I'm assuming OP is new to this, I got that sense. If not, ignore everything I'm saying because you know already :) I can't agree with Bloodweiser more. I so wish I had spent more time on the forums learning before I bought my first boat. There is a saying "buy your second boat...

228 - making it water tight?

Yeah, exactly. I want exact same setup, pull + electric start, power trim, and a alternator that can charge. One thing I just noticed is that the Tohatsu 20, 15, and 9.9hp all share a 333cc engine. So perhaps the smaller ones are just tuned down versions. Given that the 20hp is the same...

228 - making it water tight?

Yeah, the whole water tight thing is what got me thinking about all this. I do have the bilge cover sealed now so it is harder for water to get in there. Still could happen so I'm just sorting through the possibilities. I'm gonna add a kicker that has a pull start and runs battery-less, that...

228 - making it water tight?

I have one of those and plan on bringing it. But I'd need to rig some way to plumb it into the system, not gonna help much if the batteries are covered in water to clamp on to the terminals. I realize I'll probably never face this but if the engine was off, or stalled, the cockpit is swamped...

    2021 228?

I have the 2020 version of that boat and like it. It took me a while to warm up to the boat, I came from center consoles, but I grew to love the 228, it is a good boat and a good looking boat. I'm surprised he went with Simrad, must be something good there because the boat comes with the...

228 - making it water tight?

Well, learn something every day. I'm more old school than I thought. Does anyone other than me feel a little worried that no battery means no engine? What if you took on some water and it shorted out the batteries?

228 - making it water tight?

Will do but I'm confused. I'm a shade tree mechanic in my retirement and I've never heard of an engine that has an alternator that needs the battery once it is running. The alternator should provide all the power the engine might want. The manual can say whatever it wants but it sure seems...

228 - making it water tight?

The scuppers have little flaps in them which are so waves don't wash up in there, sort of a crappy check valve. They work both ways, hundreds of gallons would take a long time to drain out. I'd guess about 30 minutes. As for bilge cover, I don't mean the little round port holes you can pull...

228 - making it water tight?

Funny you should bump this topic. Last night I tried to get water in the bilge from the cockpit and nothing was coming out the bilge drain. So I'm wondering if I was imagining things. This morning, I got some gaskets and covered up the scuppers and turned the hose on. I left it on longer and...

    Kicker on a 228.

Yeah, I've been looking at that. Do people have good or bad stuff to say about Tohatsu? I had one on my Triumph and if I kept the gas clean it worked but I had very few hours.

    A question about trailers

Figured out a better answer. Emailed my dealer and said I bought a $128K boat, new boat, new trailer, you figure it out. Why the heck is this my problem? It isn't.

    A question about trailers

So that's kinda hard to do, it would be very fiddly. And dangerous because the old bowpost provides zero holding power, if I have to stomp on the brakes the boat would be in my flatbed. Do you know for _fact_ that the bow eye won't let me tilt the boat up? That seems counter intuitive because...

    A question about trailers

So my parts are here and I have a new problem. I think because the old post was bent the boat is too far forward. I think want the tacked on ubolt to be all the to the aft of the trailer on the tongue? That's where the old started out. In order to do that I need to drag the boat backwards...

    Kicker on a 228.

I don't even think a 20 inch is long enough on my 228 bracket. You have to bolt a bracket to the bracket to make a motor mount so I'm thinking the T9.9 and linkage so I can steer from the helm. I just looked, the T9.9 has a carb, I hate carbs. Gotta go see if they make a fuel infected one...

    Kicker on a 228.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I list to port on plane. And I have 39 pounds of downrigger balls I can move from side to side to tweak it. So you have batteries to starboard and kicker to port side? And you want me to leave the batteries and do kicker to starboard. You agree with other...

    50 hr 226 review.

Sweet looking ride. As a newbie 228 owner, why did you like the 226 better? Because backing up is weird in the 228? I went 228 because it was what my dealer had and I really like the high transom (though you have more or less the same thing if you put that foldy thingy up). I also like the...

    Looking at 228 or 258

I run my downriggers in the rod holders like you can see here: http://www.mcvoy.com/lm/boat/ I'm still sorting things so I can't tell you how well that works. It works fine in a triumph but the rod holders are encased in foam (which means they are stronger; it also means they don't drain...

    Looking at 228 or 258

I have a 2020 228 (not for sale). If you have a bit more than $100K you can have a brand new, 15 hours, 2019 228. I paid $128K for mine including tax and license so that 2019 is a screaming deal. It has electronics, I paid extra for that. I have nothing to do with the dealer selling the 2019...
