Awlgrip Repair & Advice On Settling A Mishap

We've painted probably over 30 boats with Awlgrip in the 5 years I've worked at the yard I'm at. We've had at least half of those paint jobs come back each season to do touch ups (mostly our summer/winter customers) and not one had to be completely repainted. I will admit Awlgrip is not as...

Bought a newer Seafarer today. Just needs new bulkhead

Buy a sheet of starboard and replace both the port and starboard bulkheads. It'll last forever and never rot out on you. I do this to all the older Grady's I buy and flip. Here's my recent 1988 22' seafarer i have for sale:

tilt/trim motor replacement for 200 johnson

If it's just the motor, usually its 2-4 bolts to remove it from the resevoir and most times the engine has to be pulled while trimmed all the way up after opening the manual release to get at the back bolts. I've never personally done one on a Johnson/Evinrude but I recall the other mechanic at...

I really hate the way that stuff looks. I'm also thinking of what can be done to replace it.

Under Deck Storage - Adding the access hatch

Are you at all decent at glasswork? If so I would consider cutting out a section of the tank cover and using the cutout piece as the hatch itself. I personally wouldn't want to install an aftermarket hatch that didn't match the color of the boat.

New to me 85' 24' Offshore (Project)

I haven't touched the boat in weeks unfortunately. I've been working 7 days a week, have to make the extra money when I can. I walk past the boat everyday though thinking about how I want it to come out. Sucks, but it'll slow down for me more towards summer and I'll get back on it. All the...

Older Grady's with new paint jobs.

I've seen this, they did an amazing job. Not a fan of that color myself, but to each his own.

Thru hull water pick up installation help

Glad you decided to go with it. It'll be a much neater install rather than having a hose hanging over the transom, especially since you have a relatively newer Grady.

Older Grady's with new paint jobs.

Older Grady's with new paint jobs.

I'm having a hard time finding older style Grady's (80's) with new paint jobs. Trying to decide what color to paint my hull (85' 24' offshore). As of right now i'm considering ice blue for the hull, or matching an awlgrip color as close to the original color. Both will look good with the...

New to me 85' 24' Offshore (Project)

looks good, definitely gives me an image of what it will look like. I don't plan on running freshwater or an aux tank, just a holding tank but a small one. So i should have plenty of room for all my rigging/batteries/ and switch panel.

New to me 85' 24' Offshore (Project)

I plan on cutting a hatch out of the rear tank panel, glassing the edges/lips etc and putting in flush mount hinges. Not too concerned with bettery ventilation, its not going to be an air tight seal.

New to me 85' 24' Offshore (Project)

nice sounds good. i'm having a hard time getting some free time to work on this thing, which i knew was going to happen. still trying to find a buyer for my 22' i'm finishing up. not a bad thing though, gives me more time to plan everything out. i got all the holes in the dash filled...

    fuel indication?

The switch should be either a momentary on/off/on type switch or regular on/off/on if equipped with two tanks. Momentary the switch will Not stay engaged in the up or down position, a normal switch it will. Sort of like a Horn style switch but both ways. Most likely the wire in the center of...

Thru hull water pick up installation help

he's referring to the hose clamps I would assume. Put the first hose clamp on then the next one below it make sure they are opposing eachother 180*. This way you can bring them in alittle closer to eachother and being able to fit 2 instead of 1. Backing blocks that I've put in were anywhere...

Thru hull water pick up installation help

I agree with you that glassing in a backing piece of some kind is definitely the right way to do it. On my personal boats that I've owned I've done it that way for sure. But if not being able to do that kind of work yourself and that's going to make or break your decision for not installing a...

Thru hull water pick up installation help

Theres no inspection plate? I had a 1988 20' Grady and just like the others, there was an inspection plate mounted to a hatch that was also removable if you took out the screws/cut the caulking/and pried it up.

What is the correct procedure for using Caulk

I would recommend boatlife's life-seal product over life-caulk. I've found the life-caulk to leave a sloppy bead and be chunky and just a mess to work with. What I do is, remove all old sealant with your choice of tool (razor blade attached to one of those handles is what I use), wipe area...

Thru hull water pick up installation help

Why ruin the look of your boat with a hose hanging over it? Thats a halfass way of doing an install if you ask me. If done properly installing a thru hull is no big deal. Also glassing in a backing plate is not necessary, I've installed tons of under water thru hulls using the supplied...
