Right. Very difficult to get hands in there. Tough to unscrew the bolt. Tough to tighten everything back up. I did bed in epoxy to make sure I had a good attachment and stability.

this is essentially what the new piece I made looks like. I had 1/2" aluminum...but the structural pieces look the same. Well done!

I know of others who have turned the forward compartment into storage as well. So, I think you have options.

I believe if you're cutting from the outside you would NOT cut through the inside layer. Otherwise, you defeat the purpose. I attacked mine from the inside. It requires removing the gunnel to fit in the new transom core. But, I did it this way to also beef up stringers/etc. and I was...

I moved my main tank forward and turned the extra space into a compartment. I built a shelf to hold my batteries and have a ton of space for bait bucket, planer boards, and bumpers. Check it out at about 7:35 mark in my video:
