    1986 Seafarer 227: 5/6/14 Update - Stringer extension prep

Re: 1986 Seafarer 227 Repairs, Updates and Upgrades Took advantage of some nice weather yesterday to skip the honey-do list and get a bit of work done on the boat. I started off by removing the water separator, bilge pump, float switch, bilge hose, excess wiring, etc. Then I removed all...

The only tabs I will ever install/use are Bennett hydraulic. EVER. Any increased difficulty in installing the system is far outweighed by their top notch customer service.

    204 Fuel fill hose removal

Do whatever it takes to get the clamp off. Cut the hose. Then unbolt the fitting and pull it out with the hose remnants attached.

    1986 GW Sailfish 255

Figure $10/gal for the tank itself and then add a couple hundred for new hoses, clamps, epoxy coating, etc. I got the new tank for my 227 from Sunrise Marine Tanks in FL. Aluminum, 90 gallons, built to the dimensions Grady provided, w/ WEMA sender and shipped to MD (commercial address) for...

    1986 GW Sailfish 255

Personally, I wouldn't waste the money surveying a $3000 boat. You can get a very good idea of the condition simply from a visual inspection using simple tools like a large screw driver (the handle is the important part here) or hard plastic mallet and a digital camera. Sound the transom...

    1986 Seafarer 227: 5/6/14 Update - Stringer extension prep

Re: 1986 Seafarer 227 Repairs, Updates and Upgrades Power...check. :D Grabbed this 1995 Merc 225 EFI over the weekend and got it set up on one of my engine stands for going through. Hours are unknown, but the compression is good. 1 year old SEI lower unit which means there are 2 years left...

    Seafarer deck plates

Well, an upgrade to 6" plates isn't possible w/out some glasswork. The large plates would have to be placed lower and this would cause some of the existing cutout to be exposed. I could close it up with glass and gelcoat, but I don't feel like getting into all that right now. :(

Advice for restoring a "Gil" bracket

From what I have read, you have about a 20 minute window to get aluminum coated before the aluminum starts oxidizing. The chemical etching just delays that process and give you an extra hour or two in which to get your primer on. There are self-etching primers out there. The only one I have...

Advice for restoring a "Gil" bracket

When I repowered my old Sailfish, I had took the chance to address some issues with the bracket as well. There were several spots where the Gil-coat as they call it had lost it's bond to the underlying aluminum. Admittedly, I cut some corners, but I was still happy with the end result. Here's...

    Seafarer deck plates

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I definitely don't want to cut into the floor, and the rect. hatches I've seen don't don't seal as well as the round deckplates. The speakers are in interesting option though. RobertH, do you have any pics of your installation? Going to pull that piece of...

    Seafarer deck plates

Anyone ever replaced these 4" deckplates with 6" ones? As it sits, there isn't enough room to get a 6" one in there. But, if I were to notch the teak trim it could be done. My only real concern is any water running down the walkaround would dump all over a 6", whereas a 4" is mostly...

    Gas Tank Hatch Recore

Here's how I do mine. Note that not all the photos were from the same hatch. I had to dig through my collection to see what I had to illustrate the various steps. 1. Top skin and core removed. Ready for grinding. Note the fan set up to try and blow away the dust created. Didn't work as...

    Temp vs. Resin

With polyester and vinylester, you can usually play w/ the catalyst percentage to work with different temperature ranges. That being said, if this is the case, it usually says so on the mixing instructions. What is the catalyst ratio that is mentioned? 1%?
