Thinking about buying this fixer upper...

Like I said...ask on www.classicmako.com. There's a whole different mentality over there. Those guys would rather restore a classic than buy a newer rig. But then again, the older ones are better in terms of build quality and design...so they are worth sinking tons of time and $$$ in to.

Thinking about buying this fixer upper...

If I drove all the way down there, it would come home with me. :D That being said, go over to www.classicmako.com and mention this there. I'm sure there's some guys from that board (most are much more knowledgeable than I) in your area that would be glad to check it out with you.

Thinking about buying this fixer upper...

In most cases, you won't see it...you'll feel or hear it. Bounce on the floor (especially the big hatch over the gas tank) and see if it seems soft or flexes at all. Pull down (hard, repeatedly) on the lower unit and look for signs that the transom is flexing. If it will tilt, let it down...

Thinking about buying this fixer upper...

Oh man, that's Pandora's Box. No telling what else the termites got to (transom, stringers, coring in hatches and floor, etc.). She will required major work I bet. Only pay what you think your can recoup should you lose interest mid-project (yes, it will be a project) and decide to sell...

    Galvanized Trailer Brand Recommendation

There was a '92 Load Rite under my Sailfish when I bought it. I was looking to do some long pulls so I upgraded to one with more capacity. That trailer was in great shape for it's age and I wouldn't hesitate for one second to buy another.

    Fuel Tank Discovery (20' Dolphin'77)

You have an old tank that someone has already put multiple bandaids on. Pull it out and replace it with a new one. That is the ONLY option.

Engine and Dash modification, Grady 25 sailfish

Probable results in a slighly increased fuel burn due the additional drag, but also makes the ride a bit better because of the extended running surface. It's just like the extension of the hull bottom on the current models.

    1993 Grady 255 Sailfish-200 optis-1.7nmpg

Is that all the time, or just at cruise...and in what conditions? I just about get that with my 225 OX66s...cruise/flat water.

    DISC BRAKES FOR TRAILER

Garden sprayer is the way to go for disc brakes. Be aware that there are two versions of the Kodiak brakes...all stainless and Silver Cadium (or something like that). I have the latter on both axles of my trailer and they are holding up fine, but then again I haven't dunked them that much.

    DISC BRAKES FOR TRAILER

How big is your boat and do you have to (by law) have brakes on your trailer? If not, you might consider an upgrade to you tow vehicle brakes instead. That's a dilemma I'm having right now with the trailer for my 17' Mako. I will be towing with a Jeep Cherokee (they aren't know for...

    180 Sportsman prop recommendation

17M is a the standard marking for a 17 pitch Yamaha prop. To get the diameter, just measure from the very center to the tip of one of the blades and then multiply that by 2. Someone else will have to tell you whether or not is a standard or Saltwater Series prop as I don't know them that...

what to do with an old fixer-upper? FIX IT UP!

That is a drop in the bucket for an old boat. It cost me that much just to get my engine up right and on to a stand because I didn't have a transom to hang it one and I didn't want it laying on it's side. :)

what to do with an old fixer-upper? FIX IT UP!

For comparisons sake, I paid $1500 for a '81 Mako 17 complete with '82 Merc 115, galvanized trailer, new fuel tank and lines (to be installed), new steering (to be installed), etc. Aside from a bad transom and gas tank hatch to be recored, the boat is in phenomenal condition. Gelcoat shines...

    Grady-drive engine spacing?

You mean these? :) http://www.sparkplugs.com/results_appOt ... 143&mfid=1 At $11.71 a piece, you would still come out ahead of comparable HP engines due to the lower fuel burn.

    Grady-drive engine spacing?

Everything I have read talks about the Suzuki 4-strokes being excellent performers. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to slap a pair on my boat. I would have to remove the graphics though. They are awful... :) My brother had a 140 Suzuki on his 1984 Tournament 19. It pushed that boat to...

what to do with an old fixer-upper? FIX IT UP!

I've got bad news for you my friend. That boat is going to be a money pit. Check this out... http://www.extension.umn.edu/distributi ... K1015.html It says carpenter ants remove wood as they make their tunnels. You need to cut it open to see how bad the damage is. Don't throw any...
