FL West Coast: Safe Depth to Run Offshore?

You have it right. Just keep 10' - 15' of water under you once you clear the outer Hudson channel marker and you'll be fine all the way down to the mouth of Tampa Bay. Navigate to the west of the outer channel markers coming out of each pass to keep your trip as short as possible. Once you're...

Trade the Grady for a bay boat?

In my part of the Gulf, conventional wisdom says that you need at least 3 boats: An offshore deep V, a bay boat, and a back country skiff or jon boat. Conventional wisdom gets expensive. I use my 226 for offshore and my J16 Carolina skiff for the back country. But I trade off trips with a...

    Cat Urine on Cushion Covers

Grady recommends dry cleaning or steam cleaning the cushion covers. The best thing I've found for removing pet odors (also works for fish odors) is Natures Miracle, which is available at most pet stores. Let it soak in and work for 10-15 minutes and then rinse with water. I would use it on the...

    Temp vs. Resin

It just takes forever to set up when it's cold. You won't hurt anything, but it takes too long between coats. I sealed up the edges of a hole that I cut in the deck of my skiff for a hatch installation last winter. It was still tacky almost a week later. It was cool in NW Florida but not as...

    Glare on all around

I had the same problem on my old overnighter. The way that I initially solved it was to put black electrical tape over the rear facing part of the light. While this was technically illegal (the anchor light is supposed to be visible 360 degrees), it was much safer than running almost blind...

    Water tank for winterizing F250

My F250 will always overheat (set off the warning buzzer) if I run it for more than a few minutes at idle using just the 2-hose muffs. After a tip from a Yamaha mechanic at Homosassa Marine, I now connect an additional hose to the flush port. Running water through both intakes keeps the lower...

    oil in bottom end

As lubricants get hot during operation, acids will accumulate over time. So it's always a good idea to change the lower unit lube before winterizing. That protects against corrosion as well as potential freeze damage from water contamination. You should also change the oil on a 4 stroke and run...

Best way to sell my Grady

You might check out Angler's Edge: http://www.anglersedgemarine.com I kept running into boats listed with them when I was looking for a used Graday. For a flat $250 they handle national advertising and provide some closing services for you. Beats paying 10-15% to a local broker.

    Article on Yamaha F225 Engines

I've been following posts about the Yamaha exhaust tube corrosion for many years. It sure looks like the problem is caused by a bad batch or a bad source of either the metal or the anti-corrosion coating. Many engines never develop the problem. It makes much sense to have your engines...

    Non Skid on Gunnels

I use Starbrite non-skid deck cleaner on all of the cross hatched surfaces. It's not slippery and really lifts the dirt out. It seems to prevent stuff from sticking as well. You can get the exact same product at Walmart under the Atwood label for a lot less money. Everything else gets...

Best fresh water wash down pump???

I don't see any reason that you couldn't use a standard raw water wash down pump like the Shurflo ProBlaster with your freshwater system. 4 gallons per min at 45 psi should be plenty for flushing your engine with the hose attachment. Don't run the engine while flushing. The difference between...

    Seafarer 228

I've seen hubs slip both ways: either a complete failure where the boat would barely move to a slight slip only when under load. Once they start to slip, they will ultimately fail completely. You can check for slippage by making a mark with a colored sharpie pen or a file on the inside and...

    issac

Folks down here took Issac pretty seriously. Boats were getting pulled and trucks were carting around a lot of plywood for shutters. People were picking up a lot of supplies at the food stores. But it passed far enough offshore that local flooding was the only real problem. It's been a very wet...

    issac

We lucked out on the Florida west coast. Maybe 2" of rain and winds not much over 25 mph. Let's hope that the thing stays fairly disorganized when it comes ashore further north.

Purple Pecan tree stains on my Adventure 208 and Johnson 200

Re: Purple Pecan tree stains on my Adventure 208 and Johnson Fruit and leaf stains are mostly tannins. Any acid hull cleaner used to remove rust stains should easily remove them. As long as you don't let the acid sit on the fiberglass for more than 15 min or so, there will be no damage. Just...

    water in fuel sensor

Faulty water in fuel sensors are a pretty common problem with the larger Yamahas. But sometimes the intermittent warning is just the result of the little float ring bouncing to the top of the filter in rough water. You should also check the sensor wiring and electrical connections down into the...

    Vaseline Solvent

WD40 should do it. Shoot some into the threaded hole, let it sit for a while, and shoot come more in. Then flush with isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) to remove the residue and allow to dry. Treat the screw the same way.

89 overnighter with original 150 yami

That 150 hp Yamaha 2 stroke was just about the most bullet proof outboard ever made. They aren't bad on fuel for a carbed 2 stroke. However, a 23 year old engine is not worth anything, so you might as well run it until something in the top end or lower unit blows. As long as you don't plan on...

    Brown stain on the hull

Anything acidic will remove that brown stain. Muriatic acid (HCL), if it is really baked in. But a milder cleaner that contain oxalic acid will do the job if the stain is fresh. You will need to replace the wax or polish in any case.

    228 Fuel Capacity

Mine starts to blink after I've burned about 100 gallons. That would leave a 25 gallon reserve.
