Garmin Navionics Chart Renewals - caution

Here's the "Where To" button and the screen behind it. I sometimes see Active Captain updating and validating charts but there is no detail anywhere.

    Replacing Lewmar windlass

My rope/chain splice half down the rope and half up the chain has been working fine on my Lewmar ProFish 700. I could not get other splices to feed and I tried a dozen times before getting this one to work. The rope is a little worn so this Summer's project is to reverse the rope for a fresh end...

    prop shaft seal

I have never done it. If I remember correctly the manual has an elaborate procedure to replace it. When I talked to my mechanic he told me they hack the seal, pry it out and press a new one in. I suggest you talk to someone who does this often for advice and maybe have them do it.

    Sea Anchors

I use a 12' ParaTech sea anchor for sailfishing in the Keys during the winter. Learned from one of the Miami charters. Worked so well I ordered one while I was still out fishing with them! https://seaanchor.com/sea-anchor/

    Reminder to turn off batteries

Shore power on all the time on dock. I never turn them off. Probably have bait pumps running and refrigerator (although it's now 12VDC/120VAC). I do take the keys with me.

Garmin Navionics Chart Renewals - caution

Active Captain bottom bar > Boat Apps > My Marine Devices shows software info. I have System Version 2024.0103.0 waiting to install. When connected to your plotter via boats wifi updated charts will be uploaded. It's strange how Garmin loads maps particularly the shaded relief. You have. to...

Garmin Navionics Vision+ Shaded relief vs. CMOR shaded relief

Did a quick compare of Garmin Navionics Vision+ Shaded relief vs. CMOR shaded relief. I don't have a CMOR unit so I grabbed images I could locate off CMOR site. Needless to say I'm not impressed! No CMOR for me.

Garmin Navionics Chart Renewals - caution

My Garmin Navionics charts are coming up for subscription renewals. I used Active Captain App to renew my Garmin Navionics US & Canada Built in charts BUS001 and Apple completely screwed it up. The BUS001 charts list for $149.99, on sale new now for $99.99 and should renew for $74.99 (1/2 of...

    Replacing Lewmar windlass

I have 250' of 1/2" 8-plait and 2-' of 1/4" chain. This is way too much for my small anchor locker. If I let out 500' of anchor line I frequently have trouble swallowing the splice. The line is all balled up and not stacked properly in the locker. I move the rope around to flatten it out and the...

Macerator location on 01 sailfish 282

The Grady White Owners manual can be an amazing source for this kind of information. Download from GW site. Typically they are Groco units installed inside the holding tank.

    Reminder to turn off batteries

I have a 1/2" PVC cap on my engine key ring for my boat drain plug. Whenever I take it out I put it on my ring. Maybe a C-cell battery on your engine key ring to remind you.

    Replacing Lewmar windlass

What Lewmar model windlass do you have? I have a Lewmar ProFish 700 and have had trouble with the rope/chain splice. Lewmar won't really help if it isn't their anchor rode and chain. Mine was a deal with Defender. Eventually I found a way to get the splice to feed...

    ac/dc mini freezer

That is more of a refrigerator. Friend of mine had one and liked it - not sure what brand. There are other single zone units that can cool down to zero degrees.

    228 Seastar bulkhead replacement lines

They look standard. Get the length and match the fittings. Also you are going to need to bleed the system. I would replace all the fluid. Order large container od SeaStar steering fluid.

    Outboard RPM Speed

My mechanic says carbon buildup on the rings is what kills them. He recommends coming in and running on the pins for a few minutes and to use Ring-Free additive.

    228 Seastar bulkhead replacement lines

You should replace them at a convenient time. When they do go pop you loose all steering.

    1990 Grady White 232 Gulfstream

The 743xsv/943xsv and 1243xsv are very good units. The radar is too. Go for the largest of the three that fits your dash and your wallet. They all have the same screen resolution. With multifunction displays its easier to see.

    1990 Grady White 232 Gulfstream

I'm convinced that most GW's of this vintage have wet transoms. That doesn't mean they are falling off anytime soon but it's coming. Look for signs of movement - inside and out. Around the rub rails, motor well, inside cracking around the transom. Make sure stringers are not separating from the...
