How to tell a stainless hardtop from an alum one ?

Ask him what he paid for it? The Grady equipped hardtops are aluminum. Aluminum does oxidise some leaving a whiteish powder discoloration. Aluminum also gets pitted. Poor quality stainless steel will have magnetic properties. The more nickle and chromium added to the alloy, the less magnetic it...

    live well use

Assuming the live functions like mine here are some tips. That plug is for the drain and a stand pipe should screw into it. This pipe elevates the drain height and water will then fill the chamber. To fill the well you will need to find the seacock valve and open it. Then turn on the switch. I...

    Gel Coat finish

Called Grady and they said if you can feel uneveness in the gel coat, you should be able to see it to. I need to have the boat checked out for a warranty issue and perhaps ask the Grady dealer to check out what I am feeling.

    help on used boat purchase

My brother had a late 80's 192 with the 140 and it topped out just under 40, like 38 or 39. My 98 CV2 hull 192 with a 150 4 stroke topped out around 44. Have the motor inpsected by an OMC mechanic. My old boat had a Johnson Ocean runner and the power pack failed twice in a couple of years. Was...

    Boats at Costco!!

wouldnt it be simpler to just tell costco members if they buy a whaler from your neabry dealer and they show their card, they will get $500 off? It is a win win. Then again I am assuming a local dealer is not involved in the promotion.

    Gel Coat finish

Last night after work I went out to thoroughly clean my boat after spending a couple weeks in the Florida Keys. I washed her and started to put Collinites on by hand and I noticed something. At the point where the shape of boat begins to taper toward the bow and a few places along the bow you...

    Boats at Costco!!

Let's hope not. In the bicycle industry brands that shifted from bike shops to big box retailers lost their reputation. in the bike industry image, quality and so forth drive the serious cyclists. Mongoose bikes in the 80s for instance was a leader in bmx and mountain bike design. Now, their...

    New Guy Questions

Magic, what mileage or fuel economy do you get with that diesel truck towing the Glufy? I have a 5.8 liter Tundra and in flatland we get around 11 towing the 228. In the mountains it drops to 9.9 or so. I love my Tundra and dont see getting a new truck for a few years down the road. just curious...

    Bilge Problem

Tom, I am a far cry from a boat builder, but it seems to me t he labor of filling the forward bilge with foam is as much as work as popping the deck off, removing the tank and cleaning the drain out? Am I missing something here? Also, and you likely already know this, but some spray on foams...

    1st cruise in my 208

Congrats on your new boat. Charleston is quite nice and we get out there from time to time myself. We cruised south on the ICW last time we were there in May and the Carolina coast sure is pretty. You gotta try taco boy either downtown or on Folly Beach, they got some good stuff. Enjoy your boat.

    boat leans to Port

oops, I went back and read your description again and noticed the boat has no lean to port at rest. There is a lot of torque on that big 300, others know more than I, but I can see it causing the lean.

    boat leans to Port

Are the batteries mounted port-side? If so, how many are there? My old 192 had a port-side list from the 2 batteries. If the trim tabs were factory mounted, then they are the correct size. They don't need to be huge to make a difference.

    Ditch Bag for smaller boat

I have an older Standard HX series ( I think)...it does not float, but it sure is tough as nails. Kyle and I were at Hontoon Island State Park along the St. Johns River in Fla. I was on my skiff and Kyle was next to me. We docked at the marina there and the radio was on the bench seat as I had...

Worst luck ever? Boat nearly sunk

Wow, I agree get that motor working properly. I use to keep my boat outside and when it rained a lot she would get enough water in the bilge through the anchor locker to trip the float switch. I would check the thru hulls like the other great posters suggested, but if you keep her outside...

    Ditch Bag for smaller boat

We bought a floating bag from ACR. It has an epirb, handheld vhf, handheld Garmin, one of those orange cylendars filled with flares, flare gun, die markers, etc, some sealed snacks and a few bottles of water. If boat/fish in cold water that survival suit is a must. I also have a knife in it.

    NOAA Small Craft Advisory Question

I find it curious as I just wanted to know if small craft was defined. The reading has been good though. It is interesting to read folks take on the conditions and so forth. As far as being anal, if small craft is wishy washy definition, then why use it? Am I being analytical? Perhaps, but I...

    NOAA Small Craft Advisory Question

Then small craft is a useless designation. They should simply state the wind and sea state conditions and be done with warning or advising people. Let natural selection take its course :D

    NOAA Small Craft Advisory Question

I have been boating on my own boat for 10 years now, excluding a lifetime being a paddler in canoes and kayaks. I understand snotty seas. I have long wondered what the term small craft meant by definition. I have been in 6 foot seas, not by choice, in my 192 and it was not enjoyable. It appears...
