Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

More pics here: http://mcvoy.com/lm/228-pilot/index.html We've been working on putting all the electronics back. Today we got the last thing (nav light) hooked up and Peter screwed the ethernet hub to the starboard in the back of the box, ditto the fusebox. I just got back from trying to...

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

Yeah, Charlie (the fabricator) wasn't sure about that when I asked for it but once he finished he told me "I should have done this on every pilot house I've built". It's a really simple design, 4 maybe 2 inch tall sections of pipe welded to the roof with some drain holes for water. Chair drops...

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

So the boat is back from Miguel's boat repair. I know you east coast people have cheap labor, it was $11K to get it *perfectly* color matched, epoxy paint not powder coat, that paint will out live me, Miguel also patched up the holes where the former hard top was attached and you can't tell he...

Pulling the trigger on a pilot house on the 228

The crows nest is just a chair on top of the roof with some pins that hold it in.

Replacing the transom on a 26’7” Grady Express 2001

It's just money. We tend to make more on the west coast and the cost of living is higher and that trickles down to the trades.

Replacing the transom on a 26’7” Grady Express 2001

I asked my fiberglass guy (Miguel's boat repair in Santa Clara) what a transom costs and he said $20K. He's really good so that is priced in. $12K sounds cheap to me.

Anyone Offshore in an Adventure 208?

I got beat up for saying the 208 is not that good of a boat for offshore. That said, Grady makes good boats. The boats can handle more than any of us want to handle. Your 208 will handle a lot but you have to pick your days. I have to pick mine in a 228. I fish with Jens who has a Canyon...

    Fitting 228 hardtop on a 208

Not exactly on point, but we recently moved my 2020 hardtop to a 1999 228 and it went flawlessly. Fit like a glove, it's obvious that Grady did not change the mold in any way. I was under the impression that the 208 is just 2 feet shorter but other than that the same? Maybe because you are...

    228 Electronics and dash upgrade

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that is Miguel's work. Look up Miguel boat repair in Santa Clara. He's working on my boat, came recommended from Johnson Hicks.

Buying a Grady White 222 Fisherman

Salt is hard on metal. All I was trying to say is 16 years of sitting in the salt is not going to do nice things to the engine, even if the engine is not in the water, it's right next to it. Yamaha makes a good engine but there is only so much they can do. Best of luck, wasn't trying to rain...

Buying a Grady White 222 Fisherman

I'd want to know if it lived on a trailer or at a slip in the salt. The former would make me a lot happier.

    2000 Adventure 208 is 150 HP enough???

200HP is what you want. I have a 250 on my 228 which is only slightly bigger. It's enough but when I'm loaded up with extra gas and ice and 3 people for a tuna run, I struggle to get on plane. The holeshot is not the best. I believe Grady was putting 200s on before they killed that model. I...

trim tabs 2000 adventure, any input?

Yes. You can see I had to use an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel to make them fit around the scupper but that was 5 minutes and we're all good.

    Sea Anchors

I have a couple of military surplus parachutes, about 5 feet across. They work way better than the sea anchor/sock things. Cheap as well, I think $25 or so. Like others have said, you have to know what you are doing to use them. That said, I'm no genius and I figured it out. Play around, I...

trim tabs 2000 adventure, any input?

The space on the transom should be the same, or similar, on 208 as the 228, it's the same shaped hull. Or so I think. What I _know_ is that there is a night and day difference between the 9x12 and 12x18 tabs on my 228. Might be particular to the part of the Pacific I'm in, but with the...

trim tabs 2000 adventure, any input?

I have a 2020 228, so similar but slightly larger hull. Stock, it came with 9x12, I read the Bennett website and those are WAY too small for my boat, they did not help much. I swapped them out for 12x18 tabs and WOW, what a difference. With the smaller tabs, I was on and off my throttle on...

Advise before pulling trigger on 1990s 226s

I'm not adding anything that hasn't been said, but 100% #1. No question. Given the problems in #2, I'd expect there are more you haven't found yet.

    Trolling motor on 271 Canyon

I fish on a 271 frequently and we have no problem trolling for salmon or halibut or bluefin with the main engines (usually 1 at a time). He has twin 300s. I'm guessing the electric motor is to hold you in place by oil rigs or something?

    Outboard RPM Speed

+1 for ring free and let them run. It sure seems to me that every boat seems happy at 4400 rpm.

    1990 Grady White 232 Gulfstream

I echo the money pit comment. I sort of went this route with my 1st boat, an older Triumph. Had that boat for 2 years, fought with it the whole time, got one fish. In 2 years. I went crazy the opposite direction and bought new. While I'm happy with my choice, a far wiser choice would have...
