Fuel Tank material for 265 Express and 232 Gulfstream

I know ethanol and fiberglass don’t mix. It cost my brother 18 grand to replace his 3 factory installed fiberglass tanks in his 36 yellowfin. The previous owner put ethanol in them n the racors were filling up with fiberglass strands. Nothing I own has ever had ethanol gas except for my truck...

    time for the bottom

Gorgeous boat. What kind of paint is on the trim tabs? I was always told to paint them with a special metal anti fouling paint to prevent electrolysis.

    Another Battery Question

Nice. I always tie strap all positive and all negative connectors together when I remove a battery so I don’t miss any wires or cross anything when I reinstall the battery.

Fuel Tank material for 265 Express and 232 Gulfstream

If your aluminum tank is decent condition with pits on the outside, it is easily repaired and fiberglassed with 3/4 oz mat. I repaired one in 1996 and it still is in great shape. I sand blasted the pits, marine texted them then glasses over the whole tank. It seals off all moisture and stops all...

    Loss of Steering

i use mostly quicksilver lubricants. the 2-4C grease is very good for the steering. quicksilver also makes the best lower unit oil. high performance gear lube is blue. I use it in almost all lower units. I would try rolling the cable out of the helm to inspect the cable worm gear and see if...

    Help

Looks like moisture getting under gel Cote. I agree with fishtale in that I don’t think it is structural. Just top layer damage.

    Loss of Steering

Sounds like your gear box could be binding. Is it rotary or rack n pinion? Every time I change a cable, I change the gear box too. Sometimes the bad cable bruises the gear box and the gear box goes bad not long after the new cable replacement. That could also lead to another bad cable when the...

    Floor board sealing (or not)

Ouch! That is a bad case of electrolysis and beyond repair. I fiberglass all my tanks. I fiberglassed my tank in my offshore in 2006 and it is still in perfect shape. It was leaking from electrolysis on the bottom when I bought it. Had many small pits and a few pin holes. I sand blasted the...

Suggestions to rebuild floor hatch over gas tank 24 offshore

Mine was waterlogged and had the rotten squares of wood from the factory in 1988. It was getting soft. My buddy’s hatch that I borrowed so I could use the boat is also original but still hard as a rock. I was curious so I put his hatch on a scale. Lol. It weighed 34 pounds. I’m thinking mine is...

If you are sneezing, it is a true sign of lean fuel.

    Floor board sealing (or not)

I woul not spray water on the fuel tanks. They need to stay as dry as possible. Removing the hatch can be a little time consuming but may not be necessary at this time. If you use 100 grit sandpaper in the groove ( careful not to sand the top gel Cote ) and clean with acetone you can recaulk the...

    Time for new batteries

I am in south Florida. I do not charge my batteries with any onboard charger either. I shut the battery switch off when not in use, and it only gets charged by the engine when I go out. I agree with seasick in that the charger cooks the battery. Seems like the people with onboard chargers are...

    Floor board sealing (or not)

Yes. That is the ge silicone I used. The way I do it is run a nice even bead down the middle then spray it immediately with a spray bottle of water and a little dawn dish soap. Spray generously and work it in with your fingers. I use a rolling motion with my fingers to take off the excess and...

Stalls after idling for too long

sometimes a primer ball can cause some issues. It is easy to replace. Make sure the arrow for the primer ball is pointing to the sky at all times. Sometimes this helps.
