    gelcoat repair advice

Epoxy is waterproof and will stick better to the polyester resin the boat hull and gelcoat are built with. You can't just use epoxy - it's too hard to sand. You need to be careful what filler you use to thicken the epoxy and improve sand ability. I use AwlFair epoxy as a pre-thickened two part...

    Removing Thru Hulls for resealing

If it's leaking most likely it's broken. If it's a plastic thru hull you can drill out the mushroom from the outside with a step drill bit (Harbor Freight). I changed all mine last year.

WEMA --- NO MORE ...for the individual customer. Been sold

Pompanette is the same way. You just have to find it online. I sold a computer cable business 20 years ago to a larger company rolling up small regional companies into a national company. At one point they came back to the salespeople and said you are getting 80% of your business from 20% of the...

Battery removal tool for 270/282 Islander/Sailfish

I replaced all my batteries this year. A little easier if you take them all out port to starboard and replace them the other way. Anyway I get them half way out and balanced then grad the handle and lift them out. If you don't have batteries with handles you have the wrong ones!

Wire from console to port side of 306

I'm doing fuel tanks on my boat. The helm hatch is up to get to the water tank and top of the fuel tank. There is a path from the helm over the water tank to the port side where you run a cable. Also from the helm down to the void behind the panel in the head then across to the port side...

    Silicone recommendation

I have my hatches up now for fuel tank replacement. They will go back down with the better grade GE white silicone mildew resistant preferably UV stable. This is a little bright for my 25 year old "Faded Grady White" but a better match than the almond. Tape out the edges first then apply caulk...

    Winterize salt water washdown

Easier said than done on my Islander. You would have to pull the aft deck hatch.

    gelcoat repair advice

I would follow SEASICK's advice. I would repair this with epoxy and glass cloth. Sand off 1" of the bottom paint around the repair. Build it up and sand it to match the hull. Give it a finish coat of thickened epoxy or epoxy fairing compound. Finish sand it.

    Winterize salt water washdown

After you blow it out hook the hose back up and pour some pink antifreeze back into the hose. Then cycle the pump. You want some antifreeze in the diaphragm pump. In Cape May I don’t worry about freezing with the boat in the water in mid-December. Out of the water yes winterize the pump.

    Transom concern

You are probable fine for now (may not be a problem at all). I'm no expert. Given it's newer boat and you are not a pro have someone who is start to monitor it.

    Transom Failure Incidents

My boat is a 1997 so it's 25 years old. Materials choices and construction techniques were different then. I don't really know what was used in your boat. I talked to the top glass shop in my area (Young's in Marmora). They weren't alarmed by the cracking I have. Usually it starts in the well...

    Transom Failure Incidents

Look carefully at the rub rail top and bottom. Most of the transom failure I have seen were not like the one above in this thread (transom so bad the motors flex). What I think is more common is the transom and the stringers separate. The transom is held in place by the fiberglass on the rub...

    Transom Failure Incidents

I have not seen the "L" bracing. I thought the stringers a fillet and covered with glass. I have a email out to GW to see if I can get some transom details but have not heard back from them.

    Transom Failure Incidents

Thanks for the photo. I saw the middle stringer in the previous photo. I'm planning to do the transom on my Islander next spring. Going to access and repair it the same way you did. There is no movement in it but I have some suspicious cracks under the rub rail. I have a feeling that there are...

Some of the stringers are suspect too. Do you have "repaired" photo before they put it back together?

    Refit of 2002 282 - It begins

GypseyRover and ItalianAngler: What was "tired" with your F225's? I have 2006 F150's with 2100 hours on them. Running fine but looking ahead to 200's (Yamaha's or Suzuki's).
