Ha! I thought that was a "cutaway" view!

I didn't see your picture, before (somehow didn't show up on my other computer). That low volume pickup is what I've been referring to as a "mushroom" thru-hull - sort a commonly used slang term for it.

Compare yours to the other poster's picture. It should be somewhat domed shaped. Either take it off, "re-dome" it or replace it.

Not "flatter than the one used for the AC side"... flatter than the strainer in the other poster's picture. But it's hard to tell 100% from the picture.

I feel a little like a broken record here, but I never heard your answer to the flattened part... :)

I totally agree there - the way those holes are, it can create ventilation/turbulence. It seems they "can" work OK, but in the case of the OP, it appears (I think I may have mentioned this) that the disc has been flattened - which would exacerbate the issue. For the OP, though, I still think...

What I meant by speed is that the speeds these "slower" boats go at do not require a scoop. I was comparing to a Sea Ray boat that may top out around 45MPH (similar to a typical Grady), yet may cruise around 25 to 30. I will say this, though... the Sea Rays have used Kohler, Westerbeke and...

Speed is not the issue, though. As I mentioned above, I have a lot of experience with Sea Rays - same speeds as Gradys. None of them use scoops - just the mushroom. It seems that the other person who had a picture of his bottom just has a mushroom, as well (with a strainer over it). This...

    Grady Advice

Explain better? Location? Strake? It looks like it's already had an attempt at "fixing" with some sort of bondo. It appears to be an air void, but sand/grind all of the paint and loose fiberglass away, then post some more pics. Once we can better see what's going on, a fix can better be...

See what I mentioned above. But... you're thinking too much :) Get rid of the strainer. 1,000's and 1,000's of boats have no exterior strainer and they have been working just fine for decades and decades. But, again, take a look at what I mentioned about your strainer if you want to keep it.

Good pic, Rcallum. While that type of exterior strainer is not "needed", it does show that it should allow the genny to function. Having trips doesn't affect anything - 30mph is 30mph is 30mph. Possibly the trips are allowing WOT to be just a bit too high for that strainer, though? Not sure...

OK. All you need to do is take that exterior strainer off (fill the screw holes with some thickened epoxy) and you're good to go. You do NOT need a scoop strainer - and for the reasons mentioned, do not put one on.

Google for mushroom thru hull - you'll probably recognize it as soon as you see it - that's the type of thru hull that "should" be there.

That's good that you think to close it, but you may not remember EVERY single time. I have a lot of experience with genny's and such - albeit with Sea Rays. But the boat it's attached to doesn't make a lick of difference. I can't remember EVER seeing a scoop used (not that I've seen...

A scoop style strainer has a good chance of forcing water into the engine when the genny is NOT running... bad. Personally, I can't remember ever seeing a genny thru-hull pickup to be anything but a mushroom style. Maybe someone added that grate over top of the mushroom? Can you take a closer...

Seafarer 22 under deck storage mod?

I don't have a 228 so I can't say for sure. But roughly speaking, probably somewhere around 3' of dead space.

Seafarer 22 under deck storage mod?

I only have one tank in my boat, so I did just what you are thinking. The empty "coffin" became storage with the help of a couple hinges. I put the hinges on the side, but you could certainly put a piano hinge along the front edge and a gas spring/shock to make it easy to open (and stay open)...

    Moonlight Port Latches

You can check and verify this, but I did a quick, 30 second google and came up with www.bsidk.com as their website. They list their US distributor contact info in their "about us" section. Call them and see what they can do - or ask for a retailer. Or ask your dealer. In the meantime, why...

Seen this a few times. A moisture meter does not a surveyor make. Good thinking to move on to another guy.

    engine lift

Ain't nothing wrong with that. Doc, just be aware that when you jump something like this you're going to get a spark. It won't hurt you - just mentioning it so you don't get freaked out. The bigger the draw (motor), the bigger spark. I'd probably clamp the positive jump pack lead onto a...
