Looking at Grady 208 or 226

I second what bayrat says. I had a Seafarer for 10 years and was out a lot of the time solo. Remember, conditions are everything to a boating trip. On a flat day you can solo a 30' into a slip. On a rough, windy day, even a small boat is a hassle without someone else aboard or on the dock to...

    moving up

When I said 10,000 towable weight, I meant including the trailer. I just looked at the weight of the 283 on the Grady site and it stated just under 5900 lbs. Add fuel, engines, gear, anchors, etc. it'll go up fast, but your 12K lift should be fine. A BIG difference in ride? Probably. Someone...

    moving up

gOtagrip; Sounds like he's a CC guy; both his choices don't have cabins. Indeed both need permits to tow. Guestimate would be over 10,000 lbs. total towable weight for both boats by the time you have fuel & gear aboard. Maybe 11-plus. Diesel would be my power of choice to move them around and...

New to the site, looking to purchase a late 80's grady

I agree with fishbust. My 23' Gulfstream has a 10 person cap. and I wouldn't have any more than 6 aboard. Even at that, no one can move around and the trip isn't fun. With the family you describe and the potential of your kids and you wanting to bring friends along, get the biggest boat you can...

Y'know, I never thought of it that way. I guess all those dance tunes did buy my water time. Neat...

    Music Thread 2

That said, I understand why others want to have tunes aboard. Music is a magical thing with compelling powers. it takes you to a special place when it's a song from your past. Some songs are just so good they don't need to be part of your history and they stand alone. My choice to distance...

    Music Thread 2

I performed music for a living for 30+ years. I'm totally tired of it and the only thing I listen to aboard my Grady is the VHF radio and the waves lapping against the hullsides.

New 2015 Freedom 307 Owner Review

This is extremely well-written and informative. Hats off to you and enjoy your rig.

    Ex Dolphin falls off Grady.

Legend; I was told via news feed that it wound up on a reef close to one of the Bahamian Islands. If no one's aboard to shut it off, and there's plenty of fuel..

23 Gulfstream Range and Capabilities Offshore

I have a 2007/ Twin 200 HP 4-strokes. Just went to the Keys from Charlotte Harbor. 197 miles 1-way. Burned 116 gal. Averaged 1.7-2.0 MPG. I don't fish or troll, but I can always get over 200 miles per tank cruising.

What do you recomend twin 150's or twin 200's

I agree with Hotchief; I have a 232 with twin 200 V6 4-strokes, circa 2006. I chose them over the 150's and am glad I did, but since the subject matter concerns the new 200's, I would go with the tried-and-true 150's. I have had no experience with the new 200's, (the in-line 4's) but the people...

    2015 models?

I agree with Fishtales & Megabytes I keep talking to dealers and they say the Marlin is not going to be dropped. For all the reasons he mentioned above, the Marlin is also my choice. The dealer and a couple different owners I talked to say the 300's are the right match as opposed to the 350's...

    Cockpit Seating

Dennis; I believe the bean bag option is for crew members who are more concerned with a comfortable passage each way than a view. The Cheetos option probably varies from Captain to Captain. I also agree with the deck chair theory. We use them and fold them up/put them away when done.

    Kudos To DennisG01

Just a short message to thank Dennis for all the help he gives everyone on this site. I'm certain he's a busy guy, and I think it's cool that he gives of his time and knowledge to assist others. It's neat to have a "go-to guy" on here. Thumbs up to Mr. D!

    232 vs 257

I went from a Seafarer 22 to a Gulfstream 232. The ride of the 232 was noticeably better. I have ridden on a friend's 258 Journey and the ride seems a little better than my 232. I believe the narrower 8' 6" beam of the Journey helps in a head or quartering sea. The 232 is 9" 3', remember, so...

    232 transducer issue

Indeed! He sold the boat due to a variety of other issues, but the trouble with the sounder/transducer caused me to really focus on getting it right with my 232. A long time trusted tech of mine did what you recommended; he found the right spot. I can sight down the hull looking forward from...

    232 transducer issue

Dennis is right.. I have a 2007 232 with twin 200 4-strokes and my transducer is mounted on the stbd side where the unit gets an undisturbed water flow with little or no turbulence coming off the hull. I get consistent readings at all speeds except in a following or head sea where there is...

    248 Voyager - Docking

Single or twins? If it's a single, you are experiencing the effects of prop torque when you reverse. Depending on whether it's right or left rotation, it'll walk the stern a bit sideways. Solution: take the boat to an area where there is little wind or current and reverse, watching what it...

    Repower 330 with 300's or 350's

I would not buy 350's anyway until they correct the problems they seem to be having with them. I have heard nothing bad and all good about the 300's.

    Repower 330 with 300's or 350's

I don't know if the fuel savings would be significant enough to recoup the cost of a repower, even over the long term. You would probably go from 1.2 to 1.3-1.4. That's a lot of cruising before you catch up financially to your repower cost. The interesting question I have is the longevitiy of...
